What Is the Difference Between Street Art and Graffiti?

June 26, 2017 at 9:52 am

Street art is a kind of fine art characterised by a pronounced urban style. The freedom of street art lies in the fact that the artist's desire is to create a picture, but not sell it for hundreds of thousands of dollars. The artist does not care what canvas or what kind of area he uses. This may well be a city with its gray walls, dusty roads and abandoned zones: this is the way street art is born.

This phenomenon of urban culture can be treated differently: from vandalism charges to rave reviews and thanks for decorating the gray walls of megacities. Examples of street art all over the world show us the high level of contemporary street artists' work. Indeed, painted houses become a heritage and can give an aesthetic component even to a cheerless and unattractive district. The most important feature of street art is that it does not appropriate the territory, but involves the viewer in the dialogue and offers a variety of subjects.

The Difference Between Street Art and Graffiti:

Graffiti is an integral component of street art, and nothing more. In addition to this, street art includes monumental painting, various performances, installations, non-commercial posters and stencils, sticker art, 3D paintings on asphalt and other forms of painting.

Undoubtedly, 3D paintings on asphalt can be called one of the most spectacular forms of street art. A pattern applied to a flat surface acquires volume due to the distortion of proportions. Looking at such a picture at a certain angle you can see a completely realistic waterfall, a precipice, a fountain ... The list of images is limited only by the artist's imagination.

Street art can be deservedly called a mature trend of art with its own deep meaning. Working on this or that object of street art each artist offers the viewer a new look at a familiar corner of the familiar city. Be it a sculpture or a simple stencil image, its author always tries to adjust his work to the environment at the same time forming various plots full of meaning. A usual graffiti author finds it important to just perpetuate his name and maybe his own style against some urban background, whereas street artists often carry a certain message to their viewers.
