The Mona Lisa is the favourite work of the great artist Leonardo da Vinci. There are many myths associated with it. There is something mysterious and attractive in this picture. Nowadays the Mona Lisa is the most popular and famous painting in the world. So what are the reasons of its incredible popularity?

Mona Lisa

In the records of Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), the genius of the Renaissance, his work on the portrait is never mentioned. But it is known that the artist continued his work until his death. Leonardo was so reluctant to part with the portrait that he refused to give the Mona Lisa to the customer despite the fee he got from the man.

The Most Interesting Mysteries of the Mona Lisa.

There are many versions of who is depicted in this painting. Some people consider
the Mona Lisa a self-portrait of Leonardo (experts know that the painter liked to depict bisexual figures, a few art critics finding certain similarity between the proportions of the face in the picture and that in the sketch of the self-portrait of Leonardo da Vinci). Others think it is either a portrait of his pupil, or mother, or just an ideal collective female image. According to the "official" opinion, the painting depicts the wife of the Florentine merchant Francesco del Giocondo, Lisa Gerardini. That is why Italians, and later the French began to call the painting "Gioconda". However, there is no complete certainty about the person in question.
The most daring and incredible version can be found in the novel "Da Vinci Code" and its screen version.Yet, researchers have none the less fantastic assumptions based on certain symbols found in the picture.
There is also an opinion that some other picture is hidden under the Mona Lisa: it can be either an angel figure or a pen in the woman's hand.

Everyone finds something special in the portrait. The woman's expression, which is frequently described as enigmatic, the monumentality of the composition, the subtle modelling of forms, and the atmospheric illusionism are qualities that have contributed to the continuing fascination and study of the work.
